O his two cheeks, made of radiant beauty,

Amid his two temple locks, made of deep blackness,

What is this redness in you both—is it from bashfulness,

Or God's coloring, or the blood of hearts?

Then he said: all that you have ascribed to them

Is true, and at evening they are untroubled.

Have you not seen the hearts beside them,

Wounded by two claws of jet?

Justice from God! Indeed, we and they

Are as far apart in rank as can be.

Two cheeks—the flame of their fire is in us,

And its light in them, without heat.

Hearts never cease to burn with anguish

For them, while eyes are in deep seas.
