وساءلتَand you asked عنيabout me سؤالاًan inquiry طويلاlengthy
It reached me that you had shown me regard
and asked about me at length.
فأكبرتُso I prized greatly ذاكthat وأعظمْتُهand esteemed it greatly
وإنْand although كانit was فيماamong what تسدّيyou bestow قليلاlittle
So I prized that and esteemed it greatly,
though it was little among what you bestow.
ورفَّعتُand I raised رأساًa head بهin it خشعةٌhumility
وأثقبتُand I sharpened للدهرِagainst fate طرْفاًa gaze كليلاdulled
And I raised a head bowed in humility,
and sharpened a dulled gaze against fate.

عزيزاًexalted وأضحىand became عدوّيmy enemy ذليلاabased
And I began to swagger, full of pride,
exalted, while my enemy became abased.

لcompletion of 'cease' مقدارُthe worth نفسيَof myself عنديin my eyes جليلاgreat
And I swore by God that never would
my own worth cease to be great in my eyes.
ولمْand why لاnot يُجلُّesteem امرؤٌa man نفسهhimself
وأنتand you ترىyou hold فيهof him رأياًan opinion جميلاfavorable
And why should a man not esteem himself
when you hold a favorable opinion of him?

only for me to be hidden from him, and unaware
that he has sought me, cloud-laden and promising rain,

to rain upon me a shower, so that always
my bough remains leafy and shade-giving from it?

فأبدتْso it voiced عويلاًwailing وأخفتand it concealed غليلاburning grief
I say to my soul, now sorely wounded,
which has wailed aloud and hidden its burning grief:
عزاؤكِyour consolation ياO نفسُsoul لاdo not تهلكيperish
فإنfor indeed لأمركfor your affair أمراًa matter أصيلاfirmly rooted

for your affair has a firmly rooted basis.

through, deeming it intolerable to be seen changing course.

بمُنفسِهof his prized wealth جلَّhe is too noble أنto يستقيلاseek release
And if a promise of his precedes reflection,
pledging his treasure, he is too noble to seek release.

يَme مقتدراًpowerful ويرانيand he sees me خليلاa friend
I rightly see him as a sovereign over me,
powerful, while he sees me as a friend.

His bounty will return to seek me out,
as a torrent seeks out a watercourse.

بشيراًa herald وجودَand the generosity يديهof his two hands كفيلاa guarantor
For this I take the radiance of his face
as a herald, and his hands' generosity as surety.
ولنand I will not أتقاضاهpress him for payment حسبيenough for me بهwith him

And I will not press him; he is enough for me,
as steward over himself on behalf of noble deeds.

And I see no fair-minded poet
who, in my eyes, could equal his countenance.

I take the morning as proof of itself
to my eye—and proof enough for me.
