O cloak of the sons of Nawbakht, easy now! For I

see you vying with the shawl of the sons of Harb.

I seek protection for you, lest you refuse a night's journey

yet endure being sent about through east and west.

    فلا تَدَعِ الثَغرَ المخُوفَ بلا دَرْبِ

    My cloak, my cloak! The lane lies between us;

so do not leave the perilous frontier without a gate.

And do not think I will not sing of the treatment

you give me, sometimes at gatherings and among drinking companions.

So spare me in winter, by my claim on you; I will not consider

accepting a cloak from you in the oppressive summer.

And be patient: through reproach one seeks from a free man

his recompense, and from a slave through insults and blows.
