O announcer among mankind of the death of God's Messenger's son,

Proclaiming his name among nomads and settled folk,

You have announced the death of a man whose slaying left

The foundations of faith and worldly life in peril.

You have announced the death of a man: no noble deed lived

Except through him, and with him it went into the graves.

You have announced the death of a man whom I never thought

Would be mourned by anything but the falling of the sun and moon.

Had anything escaped its appointed span, there would have tumbled

The bright stars upon him, in every manner of falling.

O you who announce the death of God's Messenger's son, rejoicing,

You have uttered the greatest of great calamities.

    إن المسامع للناعين والبُشَر

    We will hear it, though our ears are deafened;

For ears must hear death-announcers and glad tidings.

Do not gloat; remember the deliverance of your freed captive.

May your faces meet the dust, O sons of al-Abbas!

Swords are the death of every resolute man

Who meets death with undivided resolve.

To God belongs Yahya's resolve, wherever he directed it!

If only it had accompanied him throughout his life!

O sons of the Prophet, does a tyrant never cease

Leaving slaughtered bodies of yours upon slaughtered bodies?

O sons of Nutayla, may God topple your throne!

How much of the Prophet's blood lies with you, spilled unavenged!

O sons of Nutayla, restrain the sharp edge of your folly.

Let not the sword dawn among you unapologetic.

If you bereave us of an arrow from our quiver,

You yourselves possess the fullest account of his renown.

Or if inexorable fate betrayed us concerning him, he has

Left you a tale eclipsing all other tales.

He kept striking you with the sword from every side,

Until you submitted in abasement and humiliation.

He left you easy prey for all people,

Abased—may you never be spared your band's humiliation!

Every day you shall face assaults like his

From us, and a defiant sword that cannot be checked.

Thus no full moon of kingship among us is extinguished

Without its equal following, with no delay.

    مَقِيلُها قُلَّةُ المستأسد الأشر

    We defend our sanctuary with unsheathed swords;

Their noon repose is the crown of the insolent man who plays the lion.

Indeed, when a tyrant twists his cheek in pride, we are

The cure for that cheek's arrogant twisting.

Through our sword and through us you attained your ranks,

Not through the freed captive, ally of helplessness and weakness.

The swords that felled your forebears

Are our swords, and with them we fell the insolent.

    ونحن أبناء تلك العُصبة الصُبُر

    They are ready for you, their keen blade never blunted;

And we are the sons of that steadfast band.

Through us God swept that ignorance away from

Your fathers, and they could see clearly what lay before their eyes.

And this is a second, pitch-dark ignorance,

Dispelled through us with brown Khatti spears.

Obscurity and the death of remembrance are yours, not ours.

Have you not heard of us throughout the chronicles?

Even our child takes a stand before which champions lower their eyes,

And his sword among them is more piercing than fate.

No sheath has ever enclosed a sword of ours, nor have

Its two targets ceased to be enemies and slaughtered men.

We take refuge in a house of glory that has no equal,

Raised aloft by the highest of exalted ranks.

The Prophet stretched out its tent-ropes for us, and they became

Suspended by their loops from the shining stars.

It has, for those seeking knowledge's flame at intervals,

And for seekers of bounty, a courtyard never forsaken.

    ناهيك من حاضر فيه ومحتضَر

    Whoever visits us there finds God present with him;

What a presence there, and what a place to visit!

Whoever's hand clings one day to our protection

Grasps a firm rope with no peril in it.

    ونحن من خُصَّ بالتقديس والطُّهُر

    Ours is intercession, and ours the thirst-quenching Pool;

And we are those singled out for sanctification and purity.

O day of Yahya, you have brought a calamity to life,

A grievous calamity for mankind, lasting to the end of the ages.

You have made calamity kneel upon the clans of Yaman,

And of Rabi'a, and the clans of Mudar.

Your loss encompassed all the people of the earth,

Sparing no living soul among them, leaving none,

Except people whom the ruin of others benefits,

Like dogs kept alive by the withholding of rain.

By God, if his kinsman were granted in requital for him

All humankind, he would still have gained no vengeance.

O slain descendant of God's Messenger, in Rajab,

O noblest of men, proven to anyone who tests you!

The sword did not betray you when its aid failed you,

And in it an avenger will one day find redress.

Though the enemies held mastery over you, you had indeed

Set the edges of keen Indian swords to rule over them.

You jolted their tyrant from the softness of his bed

With terror, and consigned him to fear and vigilance.

You made a sharpened blade lap the heart-blood of your enemies,

One of those blue blades that stare without sight.

O killer of the son of Ali and the son of Fatima,

Ruin to your striving, in coming and going!

O killer of the son of Ali, your killing him

Will harvest the bitterest fruit for you.

With what face will you meet God, offering excuses?

Your enormous sin is far beyond excuse.

God is your adversary; see how you can defeat Him in argument.

No, you are the feeblest disputant—stones for your mouth!

Had the children of Eve shared with you in his blood,

They would be hurled into Saqar, O son of Fire's daughter.

How little you differ from Yazid in his hostility toward

The Prophet's family, and the killing of the radiant lords!

Upon you falls the All-Merciful's curse,

In secrecy and openly, in evenings and mornings,

And on whoever traveled by night toward him, or counseled it,

And whoever intended that, female or male,

And whoever saw him yet would not offer his own lifeblood,

And whoever stayed behind from him without being forced.

Ruin to a people who foolishly staked their faith

On a despised man who only worsens the loss in their bargain.

They openly defied God over the Prophet's kin, and did not

Honor for him the sanctity of kinship, nor the covenant.

They were dutiful to a base man, undutiful to God, and clung

To a weak rope from him, with failing strands.

God's enemies marched against him by night, rushing forth,

Playing the lion, clad in the leopard's skin,

    Waging war with unsheathed swords,

As though they had set out against the Byzantines and the Khazars.

O band of idolatry, how high your fortunes rise!

You have overcome the lord of victory and triumph.

You have overcome one who never brandished his blade

Without making it master of heads and necks.

You have overcome one whose fingers

Took among us the place that sustenance holds for mankind.

A noble man whose lineage comes from God's Messenger,

Through the Legatee and his two grandsons, down to Umar.

Alas for the best of the dead after his father,

And the best ever to proclaim his lineage and take pride in it.

I reproach myself for living, when

His death-announcer has risen, gleeful and insolent.

I shall exhaust the many forms of praise for him,

Proclaiming it openly to the enemies, unconcealed.

And I give my love to the People of the House, for they are

The best of creation—no, the choicest of the choice.

Would that I had been among those who beheld him

Alive, and had followed when he followed the trail.
