O Ahmad son of Sa'id, do not die of anguish.

For love has two tastes: bitter and honey-sweet.

It holds calamities, some of which have struck me.

And calamities add weight to the scales.

I was told that Muhibb's vulva spent the night as

“Zayd”—and Zayd, by the rules of grammar, is the object.

She spent the night a bride with husbands, and she had

a wedding—by your life!—that Gabriel did not witness.

She sang by day and spent the night playing the pipe

    until morning—and circumstances change.

Muhibb said, with the restraining clamp biting into her,

amid the drinking companions, the sword of fucking unsheathed:

    إن الحمارَ حمارُ السوءِ مَوْحُول

    “The donkey slipped—that was his wish;

the donkey, that wicked donkey, is mired.”

O Ahmad son of Sa'id, if only you had seen her

when hands were anklets around her legs!

O Ahmad son of Sa'id, if only you had seen her

with her hem a towel for the men's cocks!

The sons of pleasure came to her in the morning and made common use

of what your soul desired, what her trousers had guarded.

    وهل على حدثان الدهر تعويلُ

    One of the calamities—so bear it, son of my mother;

can the vicissitudes of time be relied upon?

Be easy on yourself, for the affair suited her,

and from her came an embrace with kissing.

And mingled with that was a dash of her roguery,

plain to see, though the beauty called it unknown.

She feigned drunkenness so that people would say to her,

“A free man is robbed only when he is slain.”

Noble patience! The lovesick man endures

his horns, even when their length twists them.

The beauty offers you her promise as recompense,

but her favors are lavished on the beardless youths.

And know, Abu al-Abbas—may you receive an extra reward—

that the lover has a crown and a wreath:

a crown which, whenever it appears, is followed by contempt,

    inevitably, while homage follows crowns.

So bear the crown: the crown is bearable,

even if you bear a crown a mile high.

The crowns of those who affect youthful passion are made of their horns,

from of old; their wreaths are made of the choicest shame.

So enjoy your pregnant woman, and know she is slaughter-stock

for fucking; all manner of deeds have been done to her.

And praise your God and ask Him to keep her safe,

and accept it, for even a little love is acceptable.

Do not forbid the young men their enjoyment of her,

for debauchery knows no forbidding or permitting.

Do not be stingy with property you do not own,

or charges of stinginess and folly will not pass you by.

And do not demand from a young man who destroyed her virginity

blood-money, for blood from arses is shed with impunity.

And what do seekers of fucking want from a man

whose deed made the road to fucking easier?

Have you not opened a public path with no turning

from what they love? Good works are gifts for public use.

Do not grow angry at verse's debasing her,

for everything she met with yesterday was debasement.

Fucking never ceased to plow her lower parts,

and fucking plows what the spade cannot plow.

Do not be vexed over her whose midwives cried,

“The one-eyed Tigris and the Nile have met!”

Count seven or nine full months for her,

and a child will come to you, head oiled and eyes lined with kohl.

Would that I knew—knowledge of the unseen is veiled—

in whose house that newborn will be brought up.

In her house—by Him for whom the pilgrims make pilgrimage!

Can the harvest of wrongdoing be turned from its perpetrator?

I can almost see you being asked then,

and giving a sound reply beside which other speech falls short:

“The lad she used to sing with brought

us a boy; revelation has its interpretation.

My sweetheart cradled a stick, and it made her cradle

a child that came to her—children, too, arrive uninvited.

They come, with no caller to summon them but glans-heads,

which have truths, foremost among them falsehoods.

Indeed, how well he summoned his bearer—

that child carried upon his mother's belly!

A child wanted a clever young servant, so he wept

until a handsome, well-built one came to him.

When he grows up, he is forever his concern,

and is carried in his hands to the houses.”

I can almost see you, with friends that day

congratulating you, one company after another.

And I am sending you my congratulations in advance,

and favors can be hastened or deferred.

So I tell you something I will not prolong,

and sayings can be shortened or lengthened:

“God has multiplied what is in her, and she is safe,

the company united and the cord joined.

So praise the giver for the blessing of increase,

since no decrease has occurred in place of increase.”

How grievous it is to me that she enjoyed her night,

while you are lovesick, stricken at heart, wasted by love!

A truthful oath, O sharer of the elephant's byname:

you have borne what the elephant cannot bear.

There were deeds of the sort you detest,

and sayings followed them with further unpleasantness.

How fine the youths of revelry, who turn their inclinations

    to diversions—and life is diversions.

And the Catholicos, with the Gospel, studies it,

as though his pandering beard were a Gospel.

He imagines his error lies in the reveller's temptations,

but only the temptations of ignorance are delusions.
