    O Abu Nasr, a man has nothing in

    the world's finery to take the place of praise.

    Your withholding flour from a loyal friend

    leaves your honor a target for blame.

    أفترْضى البخل عنها بالعرَض

    Some have given their very substance for glory;

    will you then be content to begrudge it mere worldly goods?

    No, by my life! Be indignant at a course of conduct

    that one like you has disdained and resented.

    Do not be one whose hand twisted tight

    a cord of affection, then followed up by unraveling it.

    No, nor one who, when

    his hand is outstretched to help and protect, draws back.

    And most deserving of regret is the one

    whose edifice God raised, yet who sank low.

    Do not squander affection like mine, for it

    is truly sound, with no illness in it.

    And bestow a favor upon me, for I

    am one who rises when summoned to give thanks.

    And store up from my words a tale

    that revives renown when renown has died out.

    ويراها الحُرُّ فرضاً مُفتَرض

    A base man does not regard it as a voluntary good deed;

    and the noble man regards it as a binding duty.

    لا تجِدني في الملمَّات حَرَض

    And take me as a shield—rather, as a source of aid;

    you will not find me feeble in calamities.
