My youth departed, and recovering it became difficult.
My youth has passed, though once it was desired,
The bond between it and me was severed.

My gray hair appeared and startled the woman who hated me—
My hair turned white, my strength began to fail me,
rather, my companion, rather, my beloved—with its white streaks.
My heart—ay, my beloved—lost its dark locks.

Rather, it frightened me because it signals decay:
Indeed it served to guide me to renewal
a tree withers when its foliage withers.
When once the withered branch begins to bloom anew.

Woe to this age, which clothes us
'Twas time itself that clothed me in rich raiment,
in a robe of bliss, then snatches it away.

When white hair laughed, I wept to see it laugh,
this is fading foliage, and this its bark.

Of two things, I choose the nobler:
Like Time in benefit and harm, discernment too,
a generous man's excuse or his wealth.
Unlike caprice, which cannot be relied upon.
