My soaring branch will brook no wrong against me,

reaching toward high honors, nor will my flourishing root.

Indeed, whenever a friend honors me,

then begins to reclaim the honor shown me,

I make it one of my pleasures to defy

him, until he tires of humbling me.

This is only by shunning him forever,

and withholding my visits from his door,

and holding myself above begging favors from him

by abasing my face before him and paying him homage,

and denying him the pleasure of reproach through

fairness toward him in all my judgments.

Nor will he see me there lamenting him,

striking my tooth and biting my thumb.

And I would never do a deed if I saw

my humiliation in its wake before my reproachers.

I banish his familiar haunts from my mind,

after my preoccupation with him and my infatuation,

until I see him, when remembering and

being reminded, as a dream among my dreams.

Nor is it forbearance to acquiesce in

oppression and its causes at my oppressors' hands.

Forbearance has brought me to struggle over the

lot, when it is the worst of my lots.

And how can I shut my eyes to indignity, when the

Persians are my maternal uncles and the Romans my paternal uncles?

And I have crowned myself through allegiance to Abu al-

Abbas, with a crown that raises even the exalted.

Ah, may God smite the band that made

time's crimes against me into crimes of my own.

Whoever begrudges giving me his bounty,

I begrudge giving him my days.

By God, these three cannot coexist: my keeping ties

with him, his wealth, and my destitution.

    فزال شركي وصحَّ إسلامي

    I had indeed made an idol a partner with God;

then my idolatry vanished, and my Islam became sound.

I seek God's forgiveness for worshipping them,

for it is among my grave sins.

My prayer to them lasted long, and was supported by

my fasting from their wealth and my ritual abstinence.

    I seek God's forgiveness—how many, how many a man

have I exalted, though he fell short of the honor I gave him!

Then I realized that he was a target

not among those the archer aims at:

one whose hand is frozen when you ask him,

    and whose rope betrays me when I cling to it;

and one who laughs at me, though nothing makes him laugh

except that my hoof is bleeding.

He laughs at everything I have wept over,

as though his pleasures lie in my pains.

If we debated in an assembly, he would know

that his force of argument is no match for mine.

By God, my heart shall not be true to a brother

whom God makes healthy when He makes me ill.

No friend is my true friend if he delights in

my leaving his wealth untouched and sparing him.

Nor do I expect the one who casts me off to prosper,

nor do I expect the one who chooses me to fail.
