My poetry lodged its grievance with al-Qasim,

and he granted redress against tyrannical Time.

He bestowed such favors that I imagined him

vying in stature with the full moon of the sons of Hashim.

And he gave so generously that I truly fancied him

competing in generosity toward me with Abu al-Qasim.

A youth whose petitioners won their satisfaction,

and who rose high, to the begrudger's humiliation.

We gather round a surging sea of his,

and seek shelter in a protecting mountain.

God built him as a stronghold for us,

as one who makes things last, not one who destroys.

He is Time itself, lending an ear to a petitioner,

but lending none to a reproacher.

His hands are ever the hands of one who pays out,

and his delight is the delight of one who gains.

Yet no spender whose hand has earned

him praise and reward is truly a loser.

And Qasim's hands never come to rest,

as though his hands were a swimmer's hands.

with the wariness of a prudent, resolute man.

And he dreads the reputation of the miserly

in the straits of an oppressive age.

And whoever wards off a savage age

finds safety from a savage age.

    Our master has no trait

that makes him fear a reproacher's rebuke.

God has indeed raised him to a station

free from blame and the faultfinder.

He has no fault, save that a beneficiary

is seen by the giver as though dreaming,

forever regarding his rightful due as unreal—

a phantom that has hovered over a sleeper.

May he never cease expending his wealth

as a shield for his unblemished honor.

And may he remain rain upon a petitioner

with a rightful claim, and vexation to the resentful.

No merchant who has sold him his praise

will bear the regret of the remorseful.

And I have now returned, not disappointed,

    nor bearing a sinner's burden.

Let no doubter indulge in suspicions:

no suspicion remains for any doubter.

I marvel at one whose prudence is what it is,

yet whose hands are Hatim's hands.

I marvel at one whose generosity is what it is,

yet who has a withholder's firm resolve.

I marvel at one whose forbearance is what it is,

yet who has a sharp sword's onslaught.

I marvel at one whose sharpness is what it is,

yet who has the compassion of the merciful.

I see each opposite beside its opposite,

among the virtues of his sound nature.

Away, you strangers to greatness! I

have been brought to a generous, knowing man.

He shines with a sunlit day of his,

and gives drink with a cloudy day of his.

    ويُعطي فيروي صدى حائمِ

    He speaks, and quenches an ignorant man's thirst;

he gives, and quenches the thirst of one circling for water.

He welcomed me with hospitality, without delay,

and a generous man's hospitality is never delayed.

He regaled me with gifts, and regaled me with wisdom,

so I lack neither of these two benefactions.

    My praise has no end,

and his gifts have no end.

A youth not censured for a squanderer's generosity—

    certainly not!—nor for a regretful man's miserliness.

Come, let your praise of Qasim flow,

for nothing cuts your letters short.

Does Qasim ask me to conceal his kindness?

I refuse to comply with the benevolent wrongdoer.

A noble man who secretly brought me wealth,

but I am no concealer of kindness.

Suppose I concealed it: could his

bounty's lightning flashes be hidden from their watcher,

and wealth's mark upon the wealthy,

and ease's sign upon one living at ease?

O Qasim, O giver of precious things,

may you ever live in lasting joy!

I praised you as one who neither diminishes

your rightful praise nor makes unfounded claims.

Thus I vied with the elder of the sons of Taghlib,

and vied with the elder of the sons of Darim.

I dispatch beautiful praise of you

to one who memorizes and to one who writes.

Your qualities are jewels enough for me,

and your servant is poet enough to string them for you.

I have never seen a master like you,

while how many servants like me you have!

May you ever be rain upon a petitioner,

and ever be vexation to the begrudger,

and attended to others while neglecting me,

    contrary to your upright scales.

There is nothing in my plight to sustain me,

though the silence of one restraining himself speaks in murmurs.

That cannot be, for you are a people

    who revive the burdened and the prostrate;

and for the sickness—the poor man's sickness—

none throughout time can root it out but you.

Whoever you abandon to his days

    is in clinging, unrelenting hardship.

After the station of those who feed others,

have I been denied the station of one who eats?

After my guarding the sanctuary of the wronged,

have you surrendered me to the oppressor?

So my spear-shaft grew pliant to those probing it,

and my wood crumbled for one testing it with his teeth.

Was I not within a bright horizon?

Why, then, am I within a dark horizon?

Was I not joyful beneath your shade?

Why, then, am I in the downcast man's seat?

    فحَسْبي بعدْلِكَ من حاكمِ

    To your justice goes my whole complaint;

your justice suffices me as a judge.

And I am indeed unjust when I complain,

while your justice is like a rising star.
