    وليغلُوَنّ عليه ما رَخُصا

    My dealings were held cheap by a man;

    And what was cheap shall surely become dear to him.

    And I shall surely strive to sever ties with him,

    And keep far from him, many times more eagerly than he.

    And I shall surely drink despite his disparagement,

    Until it is as though I were not diminished.

    For I find no choking in my life

    At parting from him—no, nor any choking pangs.

    حسبي بذكري حُقرتي نغصا

    There is no distress in parting from one who leaves;

    Remembering my humiliation is distress enough for me.

    If weariness has driven his heart away

    From me, my heart has already departed from him.

    ولقد جرى لكنه نكصا

    He did come forth, but only to evade;

    He did run, but then retreated.

    Indeed, a sword may become a fire-striker,

    And a fresh, supple branch may be turned into a stick.
