ليهنكِ أنْ قد مرّ من صدر دولة

شهورٌ توالتْ بعدهن شهورُ

May it gladden you that, since a reign began, there have passed

It saddens me that months have passed

Months, followed by still more months;

Since the glory days of this state,

وأن العدا قد سُوِّغوا في مؤمّل

وأن العدا قد سُوِّغوا في مؤمّل

مقالهمُ بعضُ الرجاء غرورُ

مقالهمُ بعضُ الرجاء غرورُ

And that the enemies have been given grounds, concerning one who hopes,

And the enemies have been allowed

For their saying: “Some hope is delusion.”

To speak falsely, sowing vain hopes.

أيُجدب يا للناس مرعَى وليِّكم

أيُجدب يا للناس مرعَى وليِّكم

وأنتم غيوثٌ للورى وبحور

وأنتم غيوثٌ للورى وبحور

Can your loyal friend's pasture grow barren—O people!—

Will the meadows dry for your people

While you are life-giving rains for humankind, and seas?

When you are their savior, endless seas?

ويدجو عليه ليلُهُ ونهارهُ

ويدجو عليه ليلُهُ ونهارهُ

وأنتم شموس أشرقتْ وبدور

وأنتم شموس أشرقتْ وبدور

And do his night and day grow dark upon him,

Does his night and day loom over him

While you are suns that have risen, and full moons?

When you are the risen suns, shining stars?
