May I be your ransom! I did not ask

you for that garment as a shroud.

I asked you for it so I might wear it

while my soul is still in my body.

And the delay over it has grown long,

and I have feared the misfortunes of time.

    So consider bestowing it

upon your devoted friend, O brother of bounties.

And do not leave it as yarn, with

    its weaver fled to Aden.

Come now, and make it reflect

the beauties of your handsome face:

    لتي دَقَّتْ عن الفطَنِ

    fine as your discernment, which

    is too subtle for other discerning minds;

closely woven as your judgment, for

    it and resolve are bound together;

    pure as your honor, for

your honor is free of stain.

And do not think you are underselling it:

    praise is sufficient payment.

And it is enough for you, if you withhold it,

as a loss, to forfeit praise.
