أطلعَmay cause to rise اللَّهُGod وجهَthe face of شهرِكَyour month هذاthis
ياO ابنson of يحيىYahya كوجهِكَlike your face الميمونِauspicious
May God make the face of this month of yours rise,
May Allah reveal your face this month, O son of Yahya, like your auspicious face,
O son of Yahya, like your auspicious face,
Then glorify it for the outcomes of truthfulness, whose mysteries are like your trusted unseen.
ثمthen جلّاهُunveil it عَنْto reveal عواقبِoutcomes صدْقٍgoodness
غَيبُهاtheir hidden nature مثلُlike غيبِكyour hidden nature المأمونِtrustworthy
then unveil it to reveal good outcomes,
By my life! It did not shade you but
whose hidden nature, like your own, is trustworthy.
The concealer of openness, the sincere of the hidden.
فلَعمرِيfor, by my life لماindeed, not أظلَّكَit shaded you إلاexcept
مُخبِتُhumble الجهرِoutward conduct مخلصُsincere المكنونthe hidden inner self
For, by my life, it spread its shade over you only as one
Like the one who has not ceased to be from old
humble outwardly and sincere inwardly,
With fasting and avoiding drowsing eyelids.
كالذيlike that which لمdid not تزلْyou cease عليهupon it قديماًlong before
مِنof صيامٍfasting ومنand of تَجافيkeeping apart جُفونeyelids
as you have always been, long before,
You have not transgressed in it what is besides it
in fasting and in keeping your eyelids apart.
Of known qualities, a help for you.
ماnot تعدَّيتَyou went beyond فيهِin it ماwhat فيin سواهُother than it
منof سجاياinnate traits معروفةwell-known لكbelonging to you عونlong-established
In it you went no further than at other times
You were silent in it and stood up after fasting
in your well-known, long-established virtues.
And prayers before it, nothing less.
صمتَyou fasted فيهin it وقمتَand you stood in prayer بعدَafter صيامٍfasting
وقيامٍand standing in prayer منfrom قَبْلهِbefore it غيرَnot دونinferior
You fasted in it and stood in prayer, after fasting
Neither your mouth nor your eyes fasted in it
and vigils before it that were no less.
Like the fasting of mouths, not eyes.
لَمْdid not يصُمْfast فُوكyour mouth دونwithout عينيكyour two eyes فيهِin it
كصيامِlike the fasting of الأفواهِthe mouths دونَwithout العيونthe eyes
Your mouth did not fast in it without your eyes,
Rather, you were heedless in it of God's prohibited
as mouths may fast while eyes do not.
So you did not glance at them with eyelids.
بلrather تغاضيتَyou averted your eyes فيهin it عنfrom حُرمforbidden things اللَّGod (word begins)
ه(completes 'God') فلمso did not ترمِهاyou aim at them بطرفwith a gaze شَفونkeenly staring
Rather, in it you averted your eyes from things God forbids,
And you restrained the tongue from any estrangement
so you did not aim a keen gaze at them.
And protected the conscience from conjectures.
وكعَمْتَand you muzzled اللسانَthe tongue عنfrom كلِّevery هُجْرٍfoul speech
وحميْتَand you shielded الضميرthe inner self رجمَthe pelting of الظُّنونsuspicions
And you muzzled your tongue against all foul speech,
The Wise Knower of God is infallible
and shielded your inner self from the pelting of suspicions.
And the infallible is not like the tempted.
والحكيمُand the sage العليمُwell-knowing باللهof God معصوprotected from sin (word begins)
م(completes 'protected from sin') وليسand is not المعصومthe one protected from sin كالمفتونlike the tempted one
And the sage who knows God is protected from sin,
None complained about you, God forbid, none complain
and the protected is not like the tempted.
About one with rebellion and madness.
ماnot شكاit complained منكof you حاشَfar be it للهfor God ماwhat تشyou complain (word begins)
كوهof it (word ends) منof ذيone with تمرُّدٍrebellion ومجُونand wantonness
It never complained of you—God forbid—as you complain
Not even much disdain from them
of one given to rebellion and wantonness;
Like what the gluttonous bellies do.
لاno ولاnor كثرةexcessive amount of التأفُّفِgrumbling منهabout it
مثلlike ماwhat يفعلُdo الرِّغابُthe ravenous البطونbellies
no, nor of excessive grumbling about it,
Meet him safely, oriented
as those with ravenous bellies do.
With the throats of enemies, arrows of death.
فانضُهُso shed it سالِماًunharmed عليهthroughout it موقَّىًprotected
بنحورِby the chests of العداthe foes سهامَthe arrows of المنونDeath
So shed it unharmed, shielded throughout it
May God lighten its weight from you, a weight
by your foes' chests from the arrows of Death.
With a reward for it, not denied.
خفّفَmay lighten اللَّهُGod ثِقلهits burden عنكfor you ثقلاًa burden
معwith أجرٍa reward عليهfor it لاnot ممنونcut off
May God lighten its heavy burden for you,
with a reward for it that never ends.
