وجاعِلُهُand the One who made him ممنamong those who يُطيبgives fine gifts ويُكْثِرُand gives abundantly
May al-Qasim receive the finest reward from Him who made his face fair,
Al-Qasim rewards Al-Hasani, beautifying his face,
and made him one who gives fine gifts in abundance.
And making him of those with a sweet scent and prosperity.
فتىa youth لاnot يَعُدُّconsiders العطرperfume ضربةَan imposition لازبٍinescapable
ولكنهbut he منfrom نفسهhis own self متعطِّرُfragrant
A youth who does not consider perfume an unavoidable necessity,
A young man who does not count perfume as a striking blow,
but is fragrant from his own essence.
But he himself is naturally scented.
أخوa man of طِيرةsuperstitious fear of omens لاnot يكرهdislikes اللهGod مثلهاits like
ولكنهاbut it مماamong what يُحَبis loved ويؤثرُand is preferred
He has a superstition of a kind God does not dislike,
A brother to a bird - God does not dislike the like of it,
but one that is loved and preferred.
But he is of those who are loved and preferred.
إذاwhen نحنwe قلناutter المدحpraise فيهof him فإنهthen indeed he
منof المدحpraise ماso long as لمhas not يَجزهrewarded it متطيِّرfearful of an ill omen
When we speak in praise of him, he
If we say praise of him, then he
takes praise as an ill omen until he has rewarded it.
Deserves praise that has not been matched by one who excels.
وإنand indeed مديحاًpraise لاnot يُثابis rewarded لنُدبةٌsurely a lament
لميْتٍfor a dead man وإنand even if لمhas not يُقبرِburied الميتَthe dead man مُقْبرone who buries
And praise that goes unrewarded is surely a lament
Even if praise is not rewarded, it is a eulogy
for a dead man, though no one has buried the dead man.
For a dead person, even if the dead is not buried in a grave.
ولوand if أصبحwere الممدوحthe praised man حياًalive تخيَّرتْwould choose
لهfor him نفسُهhis own self ماwhat يصطفيselects المتخيرthe discerning chooser
And were the praised man alive, he would choose
If the praised one were to wake alive, his own soul
for himself what the discerning chooser selects.
Would choose for him what the choosy would select.
ومنand among خِيَرِthe best الأشياءthings باقٍsomething lasting تحوزُهُyou acquire it

And among the best things is something lasting that you acquire
Of the best of things, lasting, which he obtains
with something perishable, when the discerning man examines carefully.
With one who passes away, when contemplated by the observant.
