March spread robes upon the soil

that Kanun had folded away before.

He clothed the hills' bare ground in mantles

of green, and draped them in rich brocade.

    أحسنَ في صُنعهِ فجلّاها

    And he fashioned for the earth every crown upon her;

he excelled in his handiwork and made her radiant.

That delighted the sky, and she began

scattering pearls upon the earth's face.

And if only you could see us, surrounded

by one clad in dark silk who had come to her,

and the sun appears to us amid the towering clouds,

through gaps in the cloud as it veils her,

like a bride who veiled herself in shyness

from her husband after he had seen her unveiled.
