Many a slain man would surely matter little to Sulayma,
How many slain Suwaylim has,
left behind in the charge, and many a fallen man,
Perishing in deceit, and how many wounded.
إذاif ماemphatic particle استبدلتْshe exchanged مُلكاًa kingdom بملكٍfor a kingdom
وأمْرعand grew lush حيثwhere ماever (generalizing particle) نزلتْshe settled ربيعُspring
if she exchanged one kingdom for another,
When one king is replaced with another,
and spring grew lush wherever she settled.
And it roams wherever spring descends.
فأولىso woe ياO بنيsons of العباسal-Abbas أولىwoe
لكمto you منهfrom him وأمرُكُمُwhile your affairs جميعُunited
So woe, O sons of al-Abbas, woe
O descendants of Abbas, it is right for you, it is right,
to you because of him, while you stand united.
It belongs more to you, and your affair altogether.
أراهI see him يُضيعsquanders ثغراًa frontier stronghold بعدafter ثغرٍa frontier stronghold
وذلكand that فيin فسادِكُمُyour ruin سريعُswift
I see him squandering frontier stronghold after frontier stronghold,
I see it losing one frontier town after another,
and that swiftly brings about your ruin.
And that is due to your corruption, swift it is.
وليسand it is not بقوةthrough the strength of الأعداءthe enemies ذاكُمthat (addressing you all)

This is not due to the enemies' strength,
And it is not by the enemy's strength that is yours,
but your man's bones are feeble.
But the immensity of your partner decrepit is.
ترىyou see العملthe province الجسيمvast إذاwhen تولَّىhe undertakes
سياستهits governance كعبدٍlike a slave يستبيعُseeks to be sold
You see the vast province, when he undertakes
You see the great deed when its rule is assumed
its governance, like a slave seeking to be sold.
By one governing it like an owned slave.
فإنso if هوit بيعis sold منwith أمَمٍease عليهagainst him
وإلاand if not فالإباقُthen running away لهfor it شفيعُan intercessor
Then either it is readily sold away from him,
So if it is sold to nations over it,
or else running away serves as its intercessor.
Or else loss claims it as intimate.
يقولhe says إذاwhen عصتْهُthey defied him بلادlands of قومٍa people
فجاوزَهاso he passed beyond them إلىto أخرىanother تُطيعُthat obeys
He says, when a people's lands defy him
It says when a people's lands disobey it,
and he passes them by for another that obeys:
Then it passes over them to others submitting.
إذاif لمnot تستطعyou can do شيئاًsomething فدعْهُthen leave it
وجاوزْهُand pass beyond it إلىto ماwhat تستطيعyou can do
"If you cannot do something, leave it,
When you cannot do a thing then leave it,
and pass beyond it to what you can do."
And pass over it to what you can do.
