ربmany a ليلٍnight كأنهas though it were الدهرeternity طولاًin length
رب ليلٍ كأنه الدهر طولاً
قدindeed تناهَىhas reached its utmost فليسso there is no فيهin it مزيدُincrease
قد تناهَى فليس فيه مزيدُ
Many a night, like eternity in length,
The night is so long my Lord, as if an epoch
Has reached its utmost; no more can be added.
That refuses to end, yielding nothing more
ذيwith نجومstars كأنهنas though they were نجومstars الthe
ذي نجوم كأنهن نجوم ال
شَيْبِgray hair ليستdo not تزولvanish لكنbut تزيدُincrease
شَيْبِ ليست تزول لكن تزيدُ
With stars like the stars of
Stars that shine like white hair
Gray hair: they do not vanish, but increase.
They do not fade, only proliferate
