Many a budding maiden has always stayed behind a veil,

Like a gazelle in neck and dark-rimmed eyes.

I kept encountering her delays and excuses,

Until, when the decree of parting descended,

I stole a glimpse of her in fear—

Its end was its beginning, such was the haste.

Then the dark recesses of the canopy curtains hid her.

Such was my gain; and she, in the simile, was

    Like the sun, clouded over all day until dusk;

Then it emerged, with half of it already set,

So I caught a glimpse of it in haste.
