تقول المعالي حين سميت بسالمٍ
بديلاًa substitute أبَيْناwe refused والأُنوفُand the noses رواغمُrubbed in the dust
بديلاً أبَيْنا والأُنوفُ رواغمُ
Lofty honors say, when I name Salim:
When they called me "Peace," unwilling we were
“We have refused a substitute, with noses rubbed in the dust.
And haughty noses turned away in scorn.
يُديرونناthey turn us عنaway from سالمSalim ونُديرُهمْand we turn them
يُديروننا عن سالم ونُديرُهمْ
وجِلْدةُand the skin بينِbetween العيْنِthe eye والأنْفِand the nose سالمُSalim
وجِلْدةُ بينِ العيْنِ والأنْفِ سالمُ
They turn us away from Salim, and we turn them back;
We spurn their "Peace," and turn their faces from it,
and Salim is the skin between the eye and the nose.”
While 'twixt the eye and nose dwells lasting Peace.
