    ر سريعةٌ وإلى الثُغورِ

    Life's changes to the hair

    are swift, and to the teeth;

so you see them both changing

while every bodily part remains sound.

The former turns gray, and the latter

wears away as the months pass.

    Their white turns black, and

the jet-black turns white without light.

Until, when the changes of death

come upon the dwellers in the graves,

decay begins with parts other than the teeth

there, and other than the hair.

    So death preserves what

    life wears away among things,

    and life preserves what

death wears away—this is no lie.
