لتعطِlet ... give الولايةthe governorship منfrom فضلهاits bounty
لتعطِ الولاية من فضلها
فتىa young man سلَّفَoffered in advance المدحَpraise فيduring العُطْلَهْthe time out of office
فتى سلَّفَ المدحَ في العُطْلَهْ
Let the governorship give of its bounty
Give authority to one whose excellence
to a young man who offered praise in advance while you were out of office.
Supplied praise in leisure though not recompensed,
فلمso ... not يؤتَbe found wanting فيin المدحِpraise منin respect of جودهhis generosity
فلم يؤتَ في المدحِ من جوده
ولمand ... not يؤتَbe found wanting منin respect of سعةthe ample length of المهلَهْthe respite
ولم يؤتَ من سعة المهلَهْ
He was not found wanting in the generosity of his praise,
Whose generosity gave him no reward,
nor in the ample respite he allowed.
Whose ample time brought him no gift.
أتجعلdo you make شغلكyour concern غيرsomeone other than امرئٍa man
أتجعل شغلك غير امرئٍ
جعلتَyou have made مدىthroughout عمرهhis life شغلَهْhis concern
جعلتَ مدى عمره شغلَهْ
Will you make someone else your concern,
Would you busy yourself with other than one
when you have made yourself his concern throughout his life?
Who made the span of his life your concern?
ومهماand whatever فعلتَyou do فأنكرتهand I disapprove of it
ومهما فعلتَ فأنكرته
فأنتthen you أباO Abu (father of) الصقرal-Saqr (the falcon) فيin الجملَهْthe whole
فأنت أبا الصقر في الجملَهْ
And whatever you do that I disapprove of,
Whatever you do, you deny him -
you are still you, Abu al-Saqr, all in all.
Yet you are, in the totality, Abul Saqr.
