Leave off thinking about my affairs, for my worth does not merit

your ever bearing a thinker's burden on my account.

Nor take burdens upon yourself for me, for I

can readily accept an excuse for a gift that cannot be given.

I am not like one denied a gift who takes an excuse for a pretext,

nor one seeking ease by overburdening a man in hardship.

Your excuse is freely granted; it is fitting that one who recognizes

the blame of the blameworthy should recognize the excuse of one with good cause.

But when the bough's sap returns,

then put forth leaves for one seeking your shelter, and bear fruit.

She is a freeborn man's daughter, wedded to you as a free woman.

If she is given a generous dowry, how fitting!

Otherwise, it suffices me to safeguard my noble daughter

with a noble, worthy match like you, Ibn Mudabbir.

An equal match is dowry enough for me; indeed, it

is the dowry for one who seeks a dowry and chooses well.

And if in-laws gave a son-in-law a dowry, you would be that man,

and to one seeking abundance, even the whole world would not be too high a price for you.

And of a gift for having accepted her, you

are more deserving; but we have wronged you, so forgive us.
