ماnot ساءنيgrieved me إعراضُهhis turning away
عنيfrom me ولكنْand yet سرنيpleased me
It did not grieve me that he turned away
His indifference did not pain me,
from me; rather, it pleased me.
Rather, I was pleased by his past friendship
سالفتاهthe two sides of his neck عِوضٌrecompense
The two sides of his neck are recompense
It compensated everything beautiful
for every beautiful thing.
His beauty compensated me
عوَّضنيhe compensated me منin place of حسنهhis beauty
حسناًbeauty فماذاso what ضرنيhe harmed me
In place of his beauty, he gave me
With more beauty, so what did his rejection harm me?
beauty—so what harm has he done me?
He did not say he had detached from me
ماnot قالhe said أنْthat قدindeed عقنيhe wronged me
بالصدِّby turning away إلاexcept بَرَّنيhe treated me kindly
Whenever he said he had wronged me
Through his aloofness, but it did me good
by turning away, he was only treating me kindly.
