    Indeed, better than supposing that

my intent has grown corrupt and ruin is my due,

is to see that, whenever this

night lifts from me, that day shines forth.

I am the one you knew, though you

startled my heart, and so I recoiled.

And whenever you wish to befriend my soul,

it is won over; yet, if wronged, it shies away.

Indeed, my dignity is to be jealously guarded,

if you reflect—and the noble guard honor jealously.

Never be one who obeys his own desire

and grows tyrannical when fate obeys him.
