إنif كنتَyou were تَمقتُyou loathe منwhoever أساءَdid wrong لأنَّهbecause he
إن كنتَ تَمقتُ من أساءَ لأنَّه
مِمّنْamong those who أساءَdid wrong وإنand even if سَلمتَyou greeted عليهِto him
مِمّنْ أساءَ وإن سَلمتَ عليهِ
If you loathe someone who did wrong because he
If you hate one who did wrong because
Is among those who did wrong, even if you greet him,
He is among those who did wrong, even if you are safe from him,
فلقدthen indeed ظلمتَyou wronged بمَقْتِby loathing ثالثِa third صاحبcompanion
فلقد ظلمتَ بمَقْتِ ثالثِ صاحب
ماnot زالceased مجتهداًdiligently يُسيءُdoes harm إليهِto him
ما زال مجتهداً يُسيءُ إليهِ
Then you have indeed been unjust in loathing a third companion
Then you have wronged a third person, a friend
Who has never ceased diligently doing him harm.
Who still tries hard, though harmed by the other.
أنَّىhow ينهنهُis restrained ناقمٌone seeking vengeance عنfrom ظالمٍa wrongdoer
أنَّى ينهنهُ ناقمٌ عن ظالمٍ
ولهُand he has الأياديthe deeds السيئاتevil لديهwith him
ولهُ الأيادي السيئات لديه
How can one seeking vengeance be restrained from a wrongdoer,
How can a hater stop a wrongdoer
When that man has dealt him ill turns?
When he is evil-handed, with evil inside him?
