If you are forcing me to say the very thing
When you are compelled to speak of him
for which you reproached me, then excuse me and speak of me fairly.
Whose blame distressed you, then excuse and speak justly of me.

I see kindness as a draught that cannot stay clear
I see convention as a draught that loses its purity
when a mote of delay falls into it.
When a straw falls into it from the flood.

Reflect, Abu Sahl, with a discerning eye,
Consider Abu Sahl with a discerning eye,
and do not mix earnestness with jest in this.
And mix not jest with earnest in this.

Has anything made one willingly forgo the abode whose bliss endures,
Delightful though it be to tarry in an abode,
except that it is something attained only after a wait?
It is but a thing to be won gradually.

Or did you choose the present world as wife
for any reason but its speedy fulfillment of the husband's need?
Over that one for no reason but to gratify the husband hastily?

Oh, why this haste to purposes, while my purpose
is fettered, walking slowly at a leisurely pace?
Is fettered, walking delicately ‘twixt the two encampments?

Would it but walk delicately ‘twixt Al-Safa and Al-Marwa,
But it walks zigzagging through the mud.
But no! It walks knee deep in the mire!

I have presumed, knowing I have ground for presumption
I drew a sword, knowing that for me
with you, smooth and yielding, in a stretch of soft sand.
You had drawn in the dusty Dehak of the sands.

And I have no favor that gives me a claim on you,
I have no proof of kindness to you
save favors you have bestowed upon me, Abu Sahl.
Save kindness you have shown me, O Abu Sahl.

And you count your own bounty as a favor
You whose favors are counted obligation
done you by its recipient—not out of foolishness or ignorance.
By the recipient, not for stupidity or ignorance.

You see a favor bestowed by you as a favor
You look on kindness you have rendered
bestowed on you, which you repay; thus your lifetime is spent in giving.
As a favor to yourself. So your nature is generosity.

فجدوىso bounty علىupon جدوىbounty وفضلٌand favor علىupon فضلِfavor
When you give seekers of bounty a first draught, you give them another:
When you succor the destitute you make them wealthy.
bounty upon bounty, and favor upon favor.
So bounty upon bounty, and grace upon grace!

Nor will the water-giver quench the thirsty circling his watering place
Your water-skin will never slake the camels’ thirst,
unless his watering is a second draught after the first.
If your watering be not a streaming upon a stream.

May those who come to drink never lack your cheerful readiness
So cease not from pouring for them gently,
to give them one thirst-quenching bucketful after another.
In continuous flow, stream after stream.

I have found you a good friend, except to one man,
I was content you should wrong all men save one alone,
whose excellence in wit and intellect you attested.
For whom you acknowledged superior merit and intelligence.

You disgorged honey for him; then, when he found it slow in coming,
You protected him with an opinion - but when
you stung him—and stinging the gatherer is the bees' custom.
He acted basely you were stung like the bee.

So be a bee that bestows bounty without harm,
So be you a bee, harming not unjustly,
and give, sparing him in this both strict justice and reproach.
Do good, therein combining justice and grace.

And win the permanence of what comes after, for it endures
Win by remaining far if your remaining
through all time; and claim alone the precedence of what comes before.
Be long, and monopolize the priority of nearness!
