    If Ibn Abi Sumayya knew

how many a brave man fears him,

he would exult and swagger in his ugliness

with a pride that makes all pride seem small.

Many a need I pursued at daybreak

    with good fortune and a noble countenance;

but I returned, when I saw him,

despairing of what I had hoped for.

    God knows that I

    loathe him in every respect.

    All humankind fear him

as do the youngest of his sons.

    Eyelids close when he appears

from the horror of his loathsome appearance.

I said, when the sight of him irritated

my eye and the eyes of those who saw him:

Oh, if only I had, in place of my sound eye,

a blind eye on the side facing him!
