If I were given the power to banish my love

For you from my soul and from my body,

I would banish it with all my strength, and then be seen

Visiting you, though I had the power to shun you.

    ولئن هجرتُ فأنت من أشجاني

    And even if I leave you, you are the object of my desire;

And even if I shun you, you are among my sorrows.

But you have wronged me in every way,

So I counted my forsaking you as kindness on my part.

May God curse the unjust brotherhood between us:

I care for you in it, while you do not care for me.

Far from it! My prudence has bound me by an oath

Not to sell my dignity for humiliation.

And even if I did so, it was after you had been

An ally of ruin against me, though you are among my allies.

So go your way, for I do not seek

Reinforcements against me for the calamities of my time.

And I shall surely restrain my cunning from treachery,

And I shall surely restrain my tongue from satire.
