If ever you resolve to do a kindness,

do not wring your kindness dry through delay.

Do not mingle a good deed with harm, for that

forces us to mingle gratitude with reproach.

Are you content to bear the byname Sahl—“Easy”—yet be found

far from easy when someone seeks a need from you?

I deem it beneath lovers of noble deeds to have

their promises appear like lightning flashes in drought,

especially after their hair has grayed, and after

the lamps of reason have shown them the course to follow.

Know, Abu Sahl, that I am learned,

with my learning known to learned and ignorant alike,

and that I discern what is fair in things and what is foul

with a strong judgment, its strands firmly twisted.

And among my views is that, when bounty comes

reluctantly, withholding is better than giving.

And why not, when you have driven the seeker of bounty

to shameful begging, bad conduct, and intrusion,

and given him a pittance after putting him off,

thus demeaning him while claiming generosity for yourself?

    وما نائلٌ جزلٌ مع المطلِ بالجزلِ

    I count as ample, among men's gifts, the one pleasant to receive;

no ample gift, when delayed, is truly ample.

And here I am, after all this, quoting

a fitting proverb in decisive words:

You delayed as the date palm does; then be as steadfast as it,

and yield its fruit—or abandon the date palm's vexing ways.

Let what you give him not be as paltry as greens,

and as slow as the date palm; that is not just.
