If a supplicant fails or his prayer reaches its limit,

then I am a supplicant, and God answers—

    وذاك دعاءٌ لا يكاد يَخيبُ

    offering the prayer of a man whose life you revived through kindness;

and such a prayer scarcely ever fails.

May God sustain your noble virtues and eminence,

for both are dear to you.

And may He keep you alive for the panegyrists who offer their praise

to you despite their shortcomings, while you reward them.

That ailment has lifted from you, and now stand revealed

the beauties of a face, clothed in a fresh mantle.

Just as a cloud has lifted from a full moon at night:

it cast its shade, then passed, leaving the pasture lush.

    فمات بها جَدْبٌ وعاش جديبُ

    It brought rain and did not strike with lightning, though it thundered;

so drought died through it, and the drought-stricken lived.

An illness renewed remembrance of you and raised

clouds of kindness that pour down rain.

And fresh recovery followed it, as though it were

youth restored, with gray old age torn away from it.

    وبالصقل راعَ المُنتضينَ قضيبُ

    And through smelting, a silver lump and an ingot gain beauty;

and through polishing, a blade awes those who draw it.

So in every house there is joy after sorrow,

and in every gathering, a poet and an orator.

They speak of the excellence that is rightly yours,

and each is right in what he says.

And if any living person were spared illness, you would be the one,

but everyone has a share in illness.

And in patience lies strength to bear the illness that purifies,

and in God and abundant kindness there is a healer.

And your help is near to every sufferer

who calls on you; so God's help is near to you.

God would not leave vacant the place occupied

by a young man with no peer in all creation.

May glory's companionship protect you from all loneliness,

for you are a stranger among these people.

And may Time repent before you of every wrong,

and come to you seeking your favor, penitent.

And may there always be for enemies, in every circumstance,

and for wealth, a grievous day at your hands.
