أضحَىhas become ابنson of شاهينَShahin للورَىto mankind عجباًa marvel
أضحَى ابن شاهينَ للورَى عجباً
بلِحيةٍwith a beard لمdid not تَطُلgrow long بمقدارِin due proportion
بلِحيةٍ لم تَطُل بمقدارِ
Ibn Shahin has become a marvel to mankind,
Ibn Shahin has become a wonder to the people,
With a beard that has grown out of all proportion,
With a beard not long by any measure—
كثيفةٍthick فيin النباتِgrowth وافرةٍabundant
كثيفةٍ في النباتِ وافرةٍ
أوْفتexceeded علىbeyond طولهhis height بأشبارby handspans
أوْفت على طوله بأشبار
Thick in growth and abundant,
Dense in growth, ample,
Exceeding his height by handspans.
Fulfilling its length by fingers’ breadths.
لوif أنهاthat it شِعرةٌpubic hair يُنَوِّرُهاhe removes it with depilatory
لو أنها شِعرةٌ يُنَوِّرُها
لمwould not تكفِهاsuffice for it نَوْرةٌa lime depilatory بدينِارworth a dinar
لم تكفِها نَوْرةٌ بدينِار
If it were pubic hair he was removing with depilatory,
If it were a single hair given light,
A dinar’s worth of depilatory would not suffice for it.
A dinar’s radiance would not suffice it.
