I was told of men who have no share of virtue,

Nor any sincere inner substance when put to the test,

Who unleash their foul abuse upon noble men,

Yet shrink from the grossly obscene.

Each is foul in his inward affection; his outward show

Is all the fine gilding and ornament you could wish.

They puff up some paltry affair of theirs,

Yet their worth does not amount to even a puff.

And they pinch in earnest amid their jesting,

And if I pinch, mine is no flirtatious caress.

And by the Sovereign, if his scorpions creep forth,

They shall surely be beset by fiercely biting snakes.

    ولن ترى الشمس أبصارُ الخفافيش

    They faulted my verse, but not with understanding;

And bats' eyes will never see the sun.

Their blindness keeps them occupied, even if they soar

In the air until they are seen above the fluttering birds.

So do not seek to see my sun as it truly is

Without eyes, as they fly without feathers.

Let no man take me for dates or dried curds,

For I am bitter aloe sap seasoned with aconite.

Let no fool among them scratch my skin,

For the wounds my nails leave are no mere scratches.

I am a man: if anyone rejects my pardon and forbearance,

I rouse my malice against him to the utmost.

    فمدية العنز في تلك الأنابيش

    Let those who dig up evil fling whatever they unearth;

For the she-goat's knife lies in those very diggings.

And they would have been spared, had their judgment guided them aright,

Stripping the qatad thorn-bush and wielding tweezers.

    فاسأله كيف يراها بعد تحريش

    He who strokes vipers complains of their ferocity;

So ask him how he finds them after they are goaded.

After they have appropriated wealth and acquired

    Gardens and trellised vineyards,

Do they envy me, though my house is a house of destitution,

Where poverty has built its nest all too well?

Then let them trail peace's skirts toward me—woe to them—

While I have not yet tucked my own skirts fully up.
