وفقت بمطراب العشيّاتِ والضحى

وفقت بمطراب العشيّاتِ والضحى

فظِلْتُ أسحُّ الدمعَ وهْيَ ترنَّمُ

فظِلْتُ أسحُّ الدمعَ وهْيَ ترنَّمُ

I was favored with a melodious singer of evenings and forenoon;

So I kept pouring forth tears while she sang.

حليفةَ شجْوٍ هاج ما بي وما بها

حليفةَ شجْوٍ هاج ما بي وما بها

تباريحُ شوقٍ يشتكيه المُتيَّمُ

تباريحُ شوقٍ يشتكيه المُتيَّمُ

A companion in sorrow—what lay within me and within her was stirred

By the torments of longing that the lovesick one laments.

فباح به فُوها وأخفتْه عينُها

فباح به فُوها وأخفتْه عينُها

وباحت به عيني وكاتمه الفمُ

وباحت به عيني وكاتمه الفمُ

So her mouth revealed it, while her eye concealed it;

And my eye revealed it, while my mouth kept it secret.
