بَلوتُ عليّاً فألفيتُهُ

بَلوتُ عليّاً فألفيتُهُ

وَفِيّاً وألفيتُ قوماً نُكُثْ

وَفِيّاً وألفيتُ قوماً نُكُثْ

I tested Ali and found him

I tested Ali and found him true,

faithful, while I found others to be pledge-breakers.

And deceitful people I also knew,

فتىً طاب في كلّ أحوالهِ

فتىً طاب في كلّ أحوالهِ

ونزَّهَهُ اللَّهُ عما خَبُثْ

ونزَّهَهُ اللَّهُ عما خَبُثْ

A young man, good in all his ways,

A man of fine character in all affairs,

and God kept him free of all that is vile.

Whom Allah kept from all that is impure,

لإخوانهِ ثُلثا مالهِ

لإخوانهِ ثُلثا مالهِ

وليس له منهُ إلا الثُّلُثْ

وليس له منهُ إلا الثُّلُثْ

Two thirds of his wealth belong to his brothers,

A third of his wealth he gave to his brothers,

and he has only one third of it.

Keeping for himself only a third,

وما زال يحيى كذا قبلَهُ

وما زال يحيى كذا قبلَهُ

وهم أهلُ بيتٍ لهذا وُرُثْ

وهم أهلُ بيتٍ لهذا وُرُثْ

Yahya had always been thus before him,

And Yahya acted thus before him,

and they are a household, heirs to this goodness.

For this was the custom of his noble house.
