ذنباًa sin هممتُI contemplated بهit فيwith شادنٍa young gazelle خَنِثِeffeminate
I seek God's forgiveness for openly abandoning
I seek forgiveness from Allah for my open sin,
A sin I had contemplated with an effeminate young gazelle.
A wrong I intended in feeble resolve.
ظبيa gazelle دعتْنيَbeckoned me عيناهُhis two eyes ومنطقُهُand his speech
بِنيَّةٍwith an intention صدقتْwas sincere عنfrom ظاهرٍan outward appearance عبِثِplayful
A gazelle whose eyes and speech beckoned me
A gazelle called me with its eyes and voice
With sincere intent beneath a playful exterior.
With true intent beyond frivolous guile.
فلمso did not أجِبْهُI answer him وحظِّيand my pleasure فيin إجابتهِanswering him
لكنْbut سكتُّI kept silent كأنِّيas though I غيرnot مُكترثِcaring
Yet I did not answer him, though my pleasure lay in answering him.
I did not answer though fortune was in response,
But I kept silent, as though I did not care.
But I was silent as if uncaring.
لاno بلrather فررْتُI fled وظلَّand kept الصيدُthe quarry يطلبنيpursuing me
واللهby God ماnot كنْتُI was فيهاin it بالفتىa youth الدَّمِثِgentle
No, rather I fled, and the quarry kept pursuing me.
No, I fled while the prey kept seeking me,
By God, I was no gentle youth in this.
By Allah, I was no lustful youth then.
أقسمتُI swore باللَّهby God لمَّاwhen قمتُI rose محتجِزاًgirding myself
أنّيthat I انبعَثْتُI set off بقلبٍwith a heart غيرِnot منبعثِsetting off
I swore by God, when I rose, girding myself,
I swear by Allah, when I stood confined
That I departed with a heart that would not depart.
That I arose with a heart not stirred.
