وماليand I have no ياO أباfather of حسنٍHasan معاشُlivelihood
I see that all people have a livelihood,
I see livelihoods for all people,
Yet I have no livelihood, O Abu Hasan.
Yet I, Abu Hassan, have no livelihood.
وليand I have مَوْلىًa patron يريشُfeathers سهامَthe arrows of غيريothers than me
فماso what ليis with me لاnot أرىI see سَهميmy arrow يُراشُis feathered
And I have a patron who feathers others’ arrows;
I have a master who showers arrows on others,
So why do I not see my arrow feathered?
So why do I not see my arrow being feathered?
بلىyes قدindeed راشنيhe feathered me ريشاًplumage أثيثاًluxuriant
وطالعنيand he came to me بماwith what فيهin it انتعاشrenewed vigor
Indeed, he has feathered me with luxuriant plumage,
Yes, he has feathered me with fine feathers,
And came to me with what restores vigor.
And blessed me with vitality.
وأرْوىand he quenched غُلَّتيmy burning thirst لوif كنتُI were أروىI am quenched
بماby what تُروَىare quenched بهby it الهِيمُthirst-maddened camels العِطاشthe thirsty
And would have quenched my burning thirst, if I could be quenched
I would slake my thirst, if I could slake it,
By what quenches the thirst-maddened, thirsty camels.
With what the thirsty beasts slake theirs.
ولكنbut آفتيmy affliction ظمأٌa thirst قديمٌage-old
وهلand can there be ريٌّquenching إذاwhen ظمئَthirsts المُشاشthe soft bone-ends
But my affliction is an age-old thirst;
But my chronic thirst is my ruin,
And can thirst be quenched when the soft bone-ends thirst?
Can any water slake the thirst of withered plants?
نعمyes لوif كانhad ساعدنيaided me قضاءٌfate

وفىwould have sufficed بالريto quench thirst بحرa sea مُسْتجاشstirred to surge
Yes—if fate had aided me,
Yes, if destiny would help me
A sea stirred to surge would have fully quenched my thirst.
And the rain of my Lord burst forth.
فصبراًso, patience قدalready أرشَّhas drizzled الغيثُthe rain صبراًpatience
وجودُand the bounty الغيثof rain يقدمُهُprecedes it الرشاشthe drizzle
So patience! The rain has begun to drizzle—patience!
So patience - the rain has feathered patience,
And the bounty of rain is preceded by drizzle.
The downpour is heralded by the drizzle.
