أقولُI say إذْwhen هَتَفَcried out الدَّاعيthe herald بمصْرعِهof his death
لبَّيْكَat your call لبيكat your call منas a داعherald بتَبْيينِwith clarity
I say, as the herald cries out news of his death:
I heard the caller's cry at his death
At your call, at your call, herald of clear tidings!
"At your service, at your service," from one who calls clearly
نعيْتَyou announced the death of منone who جَمَدتْfroze غُزْرُcopiously tearful العيونِthe eyes لهfor him
فلمso not تَفِضْflow عَبْرةٌa tear منfrom عَيْنِthe eye of مَحْزونa grieving person
You announced the death of one for whom tear-brimming eyes froze,
You were mourned by eyes whose torrents were frozen for him
so no tear flowed from a grieving eye;
Yet no tear falls from a grieving eye
ومَنْand one who يَقِلُّis scarce لَهُfor him الدَّاعِيthe supplicant بمغفرةٍfor forgiveness
ويُنشدُand recite النَّاسُthe people فيهabout him بيتَthe verse of يَقْطينYaqtin
and one for whom few pray for forgiveness,
And who will say few prayers for him
while people recite Yaqtin's verse about him:
While people recite verses about him
فإنfor if تُصبْكَbefalls you منfrom الأَيَّامthe days جائحةٌa calamity
لمnot يُبْكَbe mourned منكَof you علىfor دُنْياworldly life ولاnor دينfaith
"For if a calamity of the days should strike you,
If disasters strike you from the days
no worldly worth or faith in you will be mourned."
None will cry for you, neither world nor faith

O Munkar and Nakir, torment him, for
O Munkar and Nakir, torment him, for he
you two are alone with an accursed man of little good.
Was seldom virtuous, accursed one
بُعْداًbanishment! وسُحْقاًand utter banishment! لهfor him منas a هالكdead man نَطِفٍtainted

Away, far away with him—a tainted dead wretch,
Away, dashed to pieces, with the one who destroys seed
misshapen in form, of the devils' brood.
Deformed of form, of devils' line
