I say—after she told the seeker of her bounty,

“Take your time; gentleness is more enduring and more apt to succeed”—

“If you are not helped in your need while still new,

then, once worn out, you are more deserving of refusal.”

And she said, “Give the heart time: love will take hold of it,

and we shall know for certain whether your love proves true.

Then you will be granted every boon you sought,

and open a door that used to be shut against you.”

So I told her, “You are not far wrong, except that

outpacing calamities, my love, is surer.

I dread a grievous death, or a touch of gray

that leaves me bereft, or intimacy that falls apart,

and sundry things, such as aversion and weariness,

and a replacement who grows sweet to the eye and so is loved.

How, then, can you hold out hope that our union will endure

unchanged, while time is two-colored and piebald?”
