رأيتُكمْI saw you تستعدُّونyou prepare السلاحَweapons ولاand do not
رأيتُكمْ تستعدُّون السلاحَ ولا
تحمونَyou protect فيin الروعterror منfrom أعدائكمyour enemies سَلَباspoils
تحمونَ في الروع من أعدائكم سَلَبا
I saw you readying weapons, yet you do not
I saw you preparing your weapons, yet
protect any spoils from your enemies amid battle’s terror;
In your souls, you harbor no protection from your foes;
كالنخلِlike date palms يُشْرعُputs forth شوكاًthorns لاnot يذودُwards off بهwith it
كالنخلِ يُشْرعُ شوكاً لا يذودُ به
أيديthe hands of الجُناةِthe gatherers ولاand does not يحميهمُwithholds from them الرُّطَباthe ripe dates
أيدي الجُناةِ ولا يحميهمُ الرُّطَبا
like date palms that put forth thorns but do not ward off with them
Like palms brandishing thorns that cannot
the gatherers’ hands, nor keep the ripe dates from them.
Fend off the hands of aggressors, nor shield them from spears.
