I saw you give wealth as a giver of gifts,

when a man gives wealth as a buyer.

Nor do you purchase praise with lavish gifts,

so as to be found generous with the bounty of trade.

Nor are you innately disposed to such bounty,

so as to be found generous with the generosity of one compelled.

Rather, you recognized kindness as kindness for its own sake,

and bestowed kindness with the generosity of one free to choose.

Among people is one who gives as a trader gives,

and another who gives like clouds made to serve.

You took the middle ground between the two states, and have always

possessed the radiant central gems of every kind.

So take this praise, whose doorway people have missed

for a long time, group after group.

And however much people guard it from those unworthy of it,

it is not withheld from you, O Ibn al-Mudabbir.
