I saw a man's hair dye, when he grew gray,

as mourning worn for the prime of youth.

And if not, then what tempts a man to dye his hair?

Does he hope that counterfeit youth will go undetected?

And how can gray hair stay hidden for one who dyes it,

while every three nights its dawn breathes forth?

And grant that he conceals his gray hair—where is his youthful freshness?

And where is the smooth skin of youth?
