I resolved to divorce my wife because of my hardship,

so she sought refuge at Qasim's waist and cried aloud.

She called his name with the cry of a woman seeking protection,

so I said, "We have sheltered a neighbor," and she felt secure.

"Your safety with me is assured as long as I live,

even if you are not reckoned an aged matron."

O Qasim, you are the refuge from what she fears

when the nights do wrong and cast their darkness.

I granted her refuge, for under your protection I am confident

in your firmest handhold when the soul grows doubtful.

And I spared a freeborn woman my resolve to sever our bond,

a woman who moaned when she feared the anguish of parting.

It was not to me she clung when I resolved to leave her,

but to my share of your patronage she clung.

My soul was not base, nor was its faithfulness wanting,

but time went mad, and so it too went mad.

And you were such that whenever a freeborn soul looked

to you for its desires, it was granted what it wished.

Even if a band from the farthest edge of the earth sought

your shelter, despite its shortcomings, it would suffer no hardship.

I tell the reproachers whom your generosity has grieved:

"Leave the rain-giving cloud alone when it pours.

Leave alone a palm whose bounty miserliness has never checked,

and which never gave a favor only to flaunt it and diminish it."

It was not Satan's way that ordained its giving

of bounties; rather, God's way ordained it.

O Qasim, may you never lack admirable qualities

that ring when tapped as dinars are tapped:

qualities that, when they intend good, hasten

toward it, but when they intend evil, take their time.

The world wept over her sorrow; then, when she discerned

your place within her, she rejoiced and sang.

    وكانت تُسَمَّى ذِلّةً فتكَنَّتِ

    Her form had been slight, but she grew tall;

she had been called "Lowliness," then took an honorific name.

May the world enjoy your face for all her days,

for long has she yearned for it and pined.

    فلما أُذيلتْ أظهرتْ ما أجنَّتِ

    Within her was an old love that she concealed;

then, when she was abased, she revealed what she had hidden.

The face you bear has not disgraced God's bounty,

whether Bounty has married it or adopted it.

God's blessing has dwelt in bliss, for at dawn

and dusk, and throughout the day, she has rested in your shelter.
