I read upon your face a sign

that plainly warned me of treachery.

By God, I shall not forget, so long as I remember my youth—

nay, so long as I remember God in anguish—

the day we met and you scowled at me,

as a debtor scowls at a creditor.

And how could I forget that while awake,

when I do not forget it even when drowsy?

I appeared from afar, and you made me think

that you had seen a devil.

You met me—at the very moment you met me—

the heaviest-lidded of all God's creatures,

as though you had undertaken for me

to restore my youth to what it once was,

or fill in the China Sea in a blink,

or sweep away Arwand and Thahlan,

or do all that could not be done

by Jesus or Moses, son of Imran.

    فاضمم إلى حُسْنِك إحسانا

    O handsome of face, you have indeed marred it;

so add kindness to your beauty.

    تصبغُك الساعات ألوانا

    You are easily bored, your pledge ever shifting;

the hours dye you different colors.

You cut off one who keeps close, yet grow

thirsty for one who loathes closeness with you,

until, once he draws close, you cut him off,

or subject him to rejection and abandonment.

And you always deem a rough man gentle,

coarse though he is, and deem the gentle harsh.

And you pledge your word; fulfilling it

means breaking it when fulfillment falls due.

Even when you fulfill it once,

you flaunt it as a favor, privately and publicly.

And I do not love one who promises me and breaks his word—

no, nor a benefactor who flaunts his favors.

You have made me wary of people, so now

my soul warms to no human being.

You humiliated me greatly, and so gave me honor:

many a man has gained honor through being humbled.
