رأيْتُكَI saw you لاnot تَلَذُّyou take delight بطعْمِin the taste of شيءٍanything
تَطَعَّمُهُyou savor it سِوَىexcept طعْمthe taste of السَّمَاحِgenerosity
I have seen you take no delight in the taste of anything
I saw you enjoy nothing
you savor, save the taste of generosity.
Except the taste of generosity
وماand what يُهْدَىis offered إليكto you منof امْتِيَاحٍrequests for bounty
أحبُّdearer إليكَto you منthan كلall امتداحِpraise
And requests for bounty offered to you
And no gift is dearer to you

فماso what باليis the matter with me أُقَوِّمُI set aright متْنَthe body of شعريmy verse
إذاwhen يَمَّمْتُI make for بابكyour door لامْتِيَاحِto seek bounty
So why do I set the body of my verse aright
So why should I refine my poetry
when I make for your door to seek bounty?
If I visit your door without a gift
ولكنِّيbut I أُلَقِّيI match العُرْفَkindness عُرْفاًwith kindness
وليسand there is not علىupon المُكَافىءِthe one who reciprocates منany جُنَاحِblame
But I meet kindness with kindness,
But I will give etiquette its due
and no blame rests on one who reciprocates.
No blame falls on one who reciprocates
