طرفتُ عيونَ الغانيات وربما
أمالتْturned إليَّtoward me الطَّرفَthe gaze كُلّevery مميلِinclination
أمالتْ إليَّ الطَّرفَ كُلّ مميلِ
I have irritated the eyes of beautiful women, though often
I delighted the eyes of the singers, and perhaps
they turned their gaze toward me to the utmost.
Every incliner inclined their glance towards me.
وماand not شبتُI turned gray إلاexcept شيبةًa single gray hair غيرexcept أنهthat it is
وما شبتُ إلا شيبةً غير أنه
قليلُa little قذاةِa mote in العينِthe eye غيرُnot قليلِlittle
قليلُ قذاةِ العينِ غيرُ قليلِ
I have gone gray by just one hair, yet
Yet I grew no grey hair but for one - that one
a little mote in the eye is no little thing.
Is no small speck in the eye, though small it be.
