رأيتُI found كُلَّevery شرابdrink لاno مَساغَease of swallowing لهfor it
غيرother than المدامةِwine إلّاexcept عِندfor ظمآنa thirsty person
I have found every drink unpalatable,
I have seen every undrinkable drink
except wine—unless one is thirsty.
Except wine for the thirsty one
كأسٌa cup يسوغهاswallows it readily الريانُthe thirst-quenched person لذتَهاfor its delight
إذاwhen تأبَّىrefuses سواهاanything other than it كُلُّevery رَيَّانِthirst-quenched person
A cup that even one whose thirst is quenched drinks for its delight,
A cup sweetened by the vine’s delight
when everyone whose thirst is quenched refuses all else.
If anything else refused to sweeten
يَملُّgrows weary of كلَّevery شرابٍdrink منwhoever يُعاقِرُهُdrinks it habitually
وشاربُand the drinker of الراحwine مشعوفٌinfatuated بهاwith it عانيa captive
The habitual drinker grows weary of every drink,
Every drink makes nauseous whom sips it
but the wine drinker is enamored of it, held captive.
Yet the drinker of wine is enamored, infatuated
كريقةِlike the saliva of المرءa person لاnot تنفكbecomes separated منfrom فمهhis mouth
وماand never يَمَلُّtires of لهاof it طعماًa taste لإبَّانat any time
Like a person's saliva, it never leaves his mouth,
A man's sip never leaves his mouth
and he never tires of its taste at any time.
Never tiring of its taste
