منof الراحِwine ماthat which كانwas الكتابُScripture مُحرِّماdeclaring forbidden
I drank, while youth made lawful
I drank when youth made drinking lawful
the wine that Scripture had forbidden.
Of wine the Scripture does not forbid
وقدand indeed طابقَagreed with الشيبُgray hair الكتابَScripture فحرمتْso it became forbidden
علىto فيكyour mouth تحريمينtwo prohibitions إنif كنتyou are مسلماa Muslim
And gray hair has agreed with Scripture, so it is forbidden
But now that age and Scripture both condemn
to your mouth twice over, if you are a Muslim.
For you forbidden twice if Muslim you profess
وماand there is no بعدafter تحريمينtwo prohibitions فيin الكأسthe cup مشربٌdrinking
لمنfor whoever كانis منamong أهلpeople of الحِجاunderstanding متوسِّماdiscerning
And after two prohibitions, there is no drinking from the cup
Yet after double bans, the cup invites
for anyone discerning among people of understanding.
Whoso on wine its stains impressed
وقدand indeed كانwas قبلَbefore الدينreligion فيin الشيبِgray hair واعظٌan admonisher
لمنfor whoever كانwas منamong شُرَّابهاits drinkers متأثّماscrupulous about sin
And even before religion, gray hair was an admonisher
Before religions ruled, the aged warned
for any of its drinkers who were wary of sin,
Against the stains of wine’s excess
كماjust as كانwas قبلbefore الدينreligion فيin الشيبgray hair زاجرٌa deterrent
لمنfor whoever كانwas منamong شُرَّابهاits drinkers متكرِّماnoble-minded
just as, before religion, gray hair was a deterrent
Before faith triumphed, elders banned
for any of its drinkers who were noble-minded.
The noble from the drunkard’s excesses
فدعْso give up شُربهاdrinking it إذsince أصبحhas become الرأسُthe head مشرقاًradiant
مُحاذرةfor fear أنthat يُصبحَshould become القلبُthe heart مُظلماdark
So give up drinking it, now that your head is radiant,
Leave off this drinking, now your hair shines white
for fear that your heart should grow dark.
Lest your heart lose its light
ولاand do not let تَرَيَنْكَever see you السنُّage واللَّهُand God والنُهىand reason

And let age, God, and reason never see you
Let not your silvered locks and scripture’s might
boldly defying gray hair, Islam, and reproach.
And Islam make you censure’s victim
