I do not weep over a friend's bounty,

Who shocked me with ingratitude after his kindness.

I lament only the corruption of affection,

Whose fruit has changed as its roots dried up.

I praise the Creator, who, had He cared for me,

Would not have entrusted my need to a creature.

I have become a burden on my friend, neglected,

Asking of him, yet receiving nothing.

These, to me, are two calamities; enough

Is part of either—a choking lump in the throat.

O Abū Sahl, who reckoned my right,

Unjustly, among rights held of little account.

I seek refuge in God from young she-goats

That you made me accept after she-camels.

You imposed humiliation and coldness on me, and set

    With that coldness, after rising.

You changed colors toward me; your rain-star failed me,

Save for flattery with flashes of lightning.

Indeed, this is an event I never imagined

Among the visitations of calamities that come by night.

How many promises you annulled with other promises,

    Whose fulfilment lay beside al-ʿAyyūq!

Do not believe the words of Ibn Kharkhashādh,

For no one who disparages you is truthful.

The old man claimed that your auspicious birth

    Was without precedent in treachery:

A birth in which a star of yours bestows

On you weariness of every devoted companion.

And never have hearts been frightened or tormented

By anything like a beloved who hates.
