أتيتُك شاعراً فهجَوْتَ شعري
وكانتand it was هفوةًa lapse منيon my part وغلطَهْand a mistake
وكانت هفوةً مني وغلطَهْ
I came to you as a poet, and you mocked my poetry.
I came to you a poet, yet you mocked my verse
That was a lapse on my part and a mistake.
It was a slip of mine, a mistake
لقدindeed أذكرتنيyou reminded me مثلاًa proverb قديماًold
لقد أذكرتني مثلاً قديماً
جزاءُthe reward مُقبِّلِof one who kisses الوجعاءِthe ailing woman ضرطَهْa fart
جزاءُ مُقبِّلِ الوجعاءِ ضرطَهْ
You have indeed reminded me of an old proverb:
You reminded me of an old adage
The reward for kissing an ailing woman is a fart.
The reward of one who kisses a leper is a fart
