    ولو أحسنت كان الحقد شكرا

    I bore you a grudge for wrong after wrong;

and had you done good, that grudge would have been gratitude.

My skin is of the earth's skin, so know this:

I give a poor yield when you sow poorly.

And no soil—may blessings be yours—could ever

be sown with hellebore and then yield wheat.

If you do good, I return good

to you; and if you do evil, evil.

I do not repay kindness with wrongdoing,

nor do I repay wrongdoing with kindness.

A grudge is called a fault, though it is praiseworthy,

just as they call sweet truth bitter.
